Local detail

How payments actually work in Kenya

Kenya is the reference case for mobile money as primary infrastructure rather than a secondary channel. M-Pesa Paybill and Till flows are not a wrapper over a card rail; they have their own identifier model, their own confirmation semantics and their own dispute path. Any deployment genuinely serving Kenyan institutions has to treat the Paybill account and the Till as first-class instruments, model mobile-wallet settlement separately from bank settlement, and reconcile against a rail the institution does not operate.

Regulatory obligations

The Banking Act and the National Payment System Act govern licensing, with CBK supervisory oversight. AML obligations follow the POCAMLA framework with mandatory customer due diligence, suspicious transaction reporting to the Financial Reporting Centre, and specific rules around agency banking and mobile money agents.

Data and privacy

The Data Protection Act 2019 is modelled on GDPR with registration duties for data controllers, explicit restrictions on cross-border transfer, and an active enforcement posture from the ODPC.

Not a bank. Dirven Software is a licensed software product. Banking services in Kenya are provided by licensed institutions, not by us.
Common questions

Kenya deployment questions

How is M-Pesa integrated?

As a native payment channel with Paybill account and Till identifiers modelled directly, not as a card-rail emulation.

Does the deployment hold customer funds?

No. Deposits sit with licensed partner institutions; the software holds no client funds.
